Chelsatta Carrier Nation, Canada

Ancestors of the Chelsatta Carrier Nation had lived in the area of Chelsatta Lake for 10,000 years when the community was displaced by Kenney Dam. Official records from Canada's Department of Indian Affairs state that the Chelsatta Carrier Nation unanimously voted to sell their lands to the Aluminum Company of Canada in 1952, but the nation firmly denies this. In 1991, a forensic scientist found that the documents had been forged. Gravesites were also submerged and destroyed by the rising waters, with remains occasionally floating to the surface to this day. (Photo credit: Frank Swannell via BC Archives)
