Displaced by Sardar Sarovar Dam
The Sardar Sarovar Dam was constructed over thirty years, with legal issues over displacement holding up construction multiple times. In total, the dam displaced between 250,000 and 320,000 people in the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. Many of those displaced were Adivasi (members of tribal ethnic minorities in India) who farmed and fished along the Narmada River. As of 2026, the Indian court system is still considering cases for reparations to the displaced people.
