Merowe Dam - Displaced People
Merowe Dam displaced 55,000 to 70,000 people. Many of the displaced people belonged to the Manasir, Hamadab and Amri tribes. The communities living along the Nile in this region had farmed the incredibly rich soil for generations, but they were resettled to areas with poor, sandy soil. Rates of poverty have increased dramatically since resettlement. (Picture credit: International Rivers.)
