Old Tehri, India

Old Tehri, India

Old Tehri was the capital of the Garhwal Kingdom, a princely state ruled by the Rajput Parmar dynasty between 1815 and 1949. The town was built at the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Bhilangna rivers and was a spiritual center in the region. 12,500 people were displaced when Old Tehri was inundated, and though landowners received limited compensation, the cultural and religious losses have not been addressed. The town of Old Tehri sat at 1,115 feet above sea level, while New Tehri sits much higher at 5,085 feet above sea level. (Pictured: Ghanta Ghar, a clocktower built in 1897.
