Displaced by Cerro de Oro Dam, Mexico
Starting in 1972, the construction of Cerro de Oro Dam uprooted more than 25,000 people, most of whom were Chinanteco. The government relocated residents on to land that was, by and large, unsuitable for agricultural, failed to provide proper materials for house rebuilding, did not make all the payments owed to landowners, and defaulted on other promises. Displaced Chinantecos continue to pressure the government to address these wrongs.
