Santo Tomás de los Plátanos, Mexico
The steeple of Santo Tomás de los Plátanos's church rises above the waters. The town was established near a pre-existing Indigenous settlement shortly after Spain's conquest of Mexico. The "los Plátanos" part of its name refers to the fruit, including bananas, that grew in the area. In the 1950s, when the original site was slated for inundation, the Comisión Federal de Electricidad and Santo Tomás de los Plátanos's residents rebuilt the town to the east.
