San Luis de las Peras, Mexico

San Luis de las Peras, Mexico

In the 1930s, the residents of San Luis de las Peras, an Otomi town, were displaced under the orders of General Lázaro Cárdenas to make way for Taxhimay Dam. While the town was established in 1536, the Otomi people had lived in the area since the twelfth century. Prior to inundation, San Luis de las Peras was known for its charcoal industry, and supplied fuel to nearby communities as well as to Mexico City. The Parish Church of San Luis Rey de Francia's tower and the Church of Cristo del Quejido's dome can still be seen above Taxhimay Reservoir's water line.
