Displaced by Manantali Dam

The Manantali Dam displaced around 12,000 people. Though the dam promised improved irrigation for displaced farmers, the specific irrigation equipment needed to access the water was often too expensive for them to afford; additionally, water-borne diseases like bilharzia increased in the area around the reservoir. The dam did, however, bring better access to electricity in the region, as seen in the town of Manantali (pictured), which was originally constructed to house dam workers but is now a resettlement site.
