Displaced by Manantali Dam
The Manantali Dam displaced at least 10,000 people, with some estimates ranging as high as 12,000. Though the dam promised improved irrigation for displaced farmers, the inputs needed to access the water were often too expensive for them; additionally, water-borne diseases like bilharzia increased in the area around the reservoir. The dam did, however, bring better access to electricity in the region, as seen in the town of Manantali (pictured), which was originally constructed to house dam workers but is now a resettlement site.
