Displaced by Chixoy Dam
The Chixoy Dam forcefully displaced more than 3,500 Maya Achi people. Following popular protest against the relocations, the Guatemalan Army and state-sponsored paramilitary groups massacred 5,000 people in the region between 1980 and 1982 in what is known as the Río Negro massacres. This occurred under the backdrop of the Guatemalan Civil War. (Pictured: a memorial to victims of the Río Negro massacres.)
