Displaced by Myitsone Dam Construction

Displaced by Myitsone Dam Construction

At least 12,000 Kachin people were involuntarily resettled in preparation for Myitsone Dam construction in 2011. Though construction has been suspended, the displaced people are still living in limbo in the model villages they were moved to. The dam has been a contentious issue in Myanmar for 15 years, with human rights leaders like Aung San Suu Kyi campaigning against the project. It has also affected the civil war in Myanmar, with the Kachin Independent Army breaking a ceasefire in part due to the construction of the dam. In 2025, the military junta governing Myanmar began plans to revive the suspended dam project.
