Hasankeyf, Türkiye

The city of Hansankeyf had been inhabited for over 12,000 years when it was moved in 2019 to make way for the Ilisu Dam. It was first mentioned on the written record around 1800 BCE in the Mari Tablets. Some important cultural sites were moved to the new townsite across the river, like the Artuklu Hamam (pictured), an ancient bathhouse. Nearly 200 additional small villages and towns were displaced by the dam.
