Displaced by Itaipu Dam

More than 30,000 Avá-Guarani people were displaced by the construction of the Itaipu Dam. The Avá-Guarani are an Indigenous people who live in Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Argentina. The damming of the Paraná River led to a loss of their territory and a change in lifestyle. In recent years, the Avá-Guarani have won a court case against the operator of the dam. The company has been ordered to make a formal public apology, and to buy 3,000 hectares of land for the Avá-Guarani as reparations.
