Gilboa, New York
Gilboa prior to inundation. A cotton industry cropped up in the village during the nineteenth century, but residents shifted back to agriculture after an 1869 flood destroyed the Gilboa Cotton Mill Company. This same flood exposed tree fossils in the area, with additional specimens uncovered during the building of Gilboa Dam. The area is home to one of the most ancient fossil forests on the planet.
