Zapata, Texas

Zapata, Texas

County courthouse in Zapata, circa 1901. Previous names for the town include Habitacion, Carrizo, and Bellville: it was renamed Zapata in 1898 after Colonel Antonio Zapata, killed for his participation in the 1839-1840 struggle to found the independent Republic of the Rio Grande. The town relocated before Falcon Dam inundated the original site. It remains the county seat of Zapata County.
