Cornplanter Grant, Pennsylvania
Basketmaker Phoebe Gordon at Cornplanter Grant. The US government deeded Cornplanter Grant--which was composed of land the Seneca were already living on--to Seneca chief and diplomat Cornplanter in the 1790s. The community played an important role in Seneca culture and served as home base for prophet and religious leader Handsome Lake. Residents unsuccessfully resisted displacement by Kinzua Dam, although Cornplanter's heirs still own the part of Cornplanter Grant that sits above Lake Perfidy's water line.
