Riffe, Washington
Riffe was established in 1898 by homesteader and postmaster Floyd L. Riffe, who came to the area three years earlier from West Virginia. Riffe residents supported themselves through fishing and farming, and the town hit its stride in the 1940s, when the local economy centered around logging and the production of railroad ties. Infrastructure in Riffe and the surrounding area included John Hunt’s grist mill, Sokol’s General Store, a grocery, multiple one-room school houses, and churches. Riffe’s final residents had left by 1967, and Mossyrock Dam inundated the town in 1968.
