Castillon Dam

Castillon Dam

The construction of the Castillon Dam was greatly affected by World War II. After the Vichy government took control of France, two resistance groups (French armée secrète and Francs-tireurs et partisans) attacked the dam and seized 5 tonnes of explosives. There was also a small internment camp nearby, where 17 Jewish residents of Castellane were detained before being deported. After the war, the dam was finally completed with the help of 800 German prisoners of war.
